Years ago, I was meditating on Deut 6:5 or Shema in Hebrew. “Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one,” which resonated mentally and spiritually in me. There were no other gods like Yahweh who delivered Israel from slavery out of His mercy. He alone established the unique covenant relationship with Israel. Similarly, He uniquely came into my life, a sinner, and a lost soul. On the night of hearing the gospel, He revealed to me that He is the one true God when I stepped forward in tears to receive Christ.

Lately, in one of my journey sessions with someone, I shared my early Christian growth in prayer. People used to offer transport to travel from the Monash campus to church at Waverley to attend church service. Well, I took the free ride to church. But I had to wake up very early and arrive at church one hour earlier. I remember that I saw the ushers and receptionists (similar to our Befrienders) were busy setting up the table and chairs and getting ready with the bulletin to welcome visitors and members. I walked further in and saw members and regular visitors arranging chairs in rows. As I put my bag down, I heard from the stage the worship team rehearsing their songs. There were so much life and small talk here and there besides the usual, “Good day mate!”

In recent months, I reflected on two words, our faith (Greek, pistis) in Christ and the faithfulness (Hebrew, emet) as in the divine character when the name of God was proclaimed in Exodus 34:6. And I find there is a possible close meaning between them.

When I was in school (and that was many moons ago), we were taught that whatever our teachers told us is right, and we were to accept and obey without question. I suspect that it is quite different in schools now, and students are encouraged to ask questions. At work, a statement like “Do whatever he/she tells you” would draw many negative comments like “what makes him/her think he/she knows best” or “you expect me to leave my brains at home and just be your hands and legs?”

Ying Hern serves in the AV team and as a coach for the youths. She was a great help in the Mongolia Mission Booth during last year’s Mission Month. She made a physical trip to Mongolia in May.

Pr Jeremy (PJ): Why did you choose to go to Mongolia for your holiday?

Ying Hern (YH): In 2020, I participated in a month-long mission trip program to Mongolia with my school’s Christian fellowship. Because of Covid, I got to know the students and ministry workers in Mongolia through zoom. They shared with me things about Mongolia and showed me the scenery there. That made me really want to visit Mongolia so I told them that when the restrictions ease out, I would want to visit them and visit the country.
