One way in which people try to discredit the Bible, is to claim that it is full of contradictions. The Bible does not contradict itself – but it does repeat itself.
REPETITION, NOT CONTRADICTION!
The word “repetition” was mentioned in some versions of the Bible (e.g. KJV, NASB, AMP) – to teach against a type of prayer. “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.” (Matthew 6:7, NKJV). This word refers to babbling (NIV) or uttering empty phrases (ESV) and meaningless words (GNB).
Unlike the empty phrases and meaningless chants uttered by people – God’s recurring Word is purposeful and enduring. The Gospel is worth telling and re-telling. One can never over-emphasize God’s truth!
When Moses gave the law to God’s people, he told them to repeat the law to their children (Deuteronomy 6:7). The same redemption story was told, not only in one gospel, but repeated in all four gospel accounts. Many of the things that Jesus said and taught – were said and taught by the prophets long before His earthly birth. The apostle John wrote in his letter to the early churches, saying: “I am writing to remind you, dear friends, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. 2 JOHN 1:5 (NLT)
WHY DOES THE BIBLE KEEP REPEATING ITSELF?
When there is a repetition – it means to pay attention!
The government, in a relentless effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, has repeatedly reminded people to wear their masks and keep a safe distance. Failure to heed the Circuit Breaker rules will result in a fine and/or imprisonment! Likewise, not paying attention to God’s Word and instructions for living brings disastrous consequences!
When there is a repetition – it also means to remember!
Repetition is necessary because the mortal man has a short memory! God’s people are often told to remember and to keep remembering (Exodus 20:8, 1Chronicles 16:12, Luke 22:19b). We are prone to forget the promises God made to us, but He will not forget. God will always make good on His Word. The repetition serves to remind us of God’s deeds.
The Psalmist testifies, saying:
“But then I recall all you have done, O Lord;
I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.” PSALMS 77:11 NLT
When was the last time you praise God for what He has done? Do you remember the things that God has done for you and for your family?
It would be absurd to stop saying, “I love you”, “thank you”, and “I’m sorry”to our loved ones just because we have said it once! God never stopped telling us in His Word how much He loves us. He never stopped re-assuring us of His constant presence and protection.
The next time you hear a repeated word or read a recurring theme from the Bible – don’t skip over. Let us not grow weary in hearing God’s truth repeatedly. For they contain promises that will see us through this life’s journey.
“As we have said before, so now I say again...” GALATIANS 1:9A (ESV)
