God, Our Helper

By Rev Goh Yong Kuang

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. - Psalm 121:1-2 (ESV)

Lately, this hymn has been playing over and over in my head…

“O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,

And our eternal home.”

This, along with many other old time favourites, are often sung at church services around the world usually at the end of the closing year or at the beginning of the New Year.

As we look back and reflect on the year that had just passed, we can’t deny or overlook the fact that God has indeed been “our help in ages past” as well as “our hope for years to come.”  We would not have made it this far if not for the Lord, who has been our present help in troubled times and our constant source of hope.

“Under the shadow of Thy throne

Thy saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is Thine arm alone,

And our defence is sure.”

As we navigate the new year, we know we can trust God to give us courage and strength to face all the uncertainties and challenges that come our way. We live under the promise of God’s protection. He alone is able to keep us from falling.

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Be Thou our guard while life shall last; and our eternal home

Let us continue to look to God, who knows and sees the end from the beginning, and trust Him to lead us through our present and through all our tomorrows!
