God Alone

BY REV HENRY HONG

PSALM 62:5 - 8 (ESV)
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

A PSALM OF DAVID – AN EXHORTATION TO TRUST IN GOD

1. To trust in God and confide in Him:

Verse 8 - “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.

The expression “pour out your heart before him” alludes to the pouring out of the drink- offerings before the Lord (as in 1 Sam 7: 6, as when the people of God poured out their hearts in confession before God).

Likewise we lay our grievances before him, and offer up our desires to him, patiently submitting our wills to his; this is pouring out our hearts.
Are we in grief over the loss of our loved ones?
Are we disappointed when our desires for our children are not met?
Are we struggling in our wills as what to do with regards to some plans or some people?
Then, pour out our hearts to God in prayer.

2. To trust in God alone and not misplace your confidence, as the heart is deceitful.

Jer. 17: 5-9 - “Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.”

For those who put their trust only in man it is likened to the picture of “a shrub in the desert,” and that is, one who is alone and without resources when disaster comes.

Only trust in God motivates confident obedience in times of crises.

When we look at the spread of the COVID-19 worldwide and wonder what’s happening to us, we need to pause and to pray,

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him” (v.5).
Those that trust in God truly (v. 1) will trust in Him only (v.5)

HE GIVETH MORE GRACE

He giveth more grace when
the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength
when the labours increase;
To added afflictions,
He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials,
His multiplied peace.
When we have exhausted our
store of endurance,
When our strength has failed
ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our
hoarded resources,
Our Father’s full giving
is only begun.
Fear not that thy need shall
exceed His provision,
Our God ever yearns His
resources to share;
Lean hard on the arm
everlasting, availing;
The Father both thee and thy
load will upbear.
His love has no limits,
His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary
known unto men;
For out of His infinite
riches in Jesus,
He giveth, and giveth,
and giveth again.
