If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

~~ MATTHEW 16:24 ~~

The month of May is our Glory Presbyterian Church Care Group Month. It is a time of reflection, to consider how God has blessed us, individually and in our small groups. It is a time of encouragement, as we proactively gather, to fellowship and encourage each other in God’s presence. It is a time of celebration, to celebrate our community life as children of God.

I grew up in a Christian household, and I am privileged to be a 3rd generation Christian. It’s truly a blessing when you have role models at home who lived up to their faith, and one particular person I recall was my late grandmother. My late grandmother was known to be generous, kind, and wise. Whenever we visited her during my younger days, I noticed she was always on good terms with her neighbors. I heard stories of her generosity and how she frequently shared the food she cooked with them. She often reminded us to be contented; and as children of God, we should be thankful always. She taught us to be generous in all circumstances. A phrase in Teochew “gam xia zhu” which means “Thanks be to God” was always on her lips. As her grandchild, I did not manage to live in the same household with her to witness her day-to-day living. However, I managed to catch a glimpse of it, in a very different way after her passing.

About 3 weeks ago I was at the Changi airport to send our missionary, Michelle Goh, off. This was one of the numerous departures to the field for Michelle, having been a missionary in Thailand for over 10 years. The question arises as to why bother to send Michelle off since she could have managed her departure on her own and the 3 of us there for the send-off could well have made scant difference.

            In Glory Presbyterian Church, we celebrate Parents’ Day in conjunction with Mother’s Day. Happy Parents’ Day to all parents and expectant parents!

            Parents’ Day is indeed a wonderful time of celebration and joy. It is also a time for the church community to affirm and encourage parents as they go through the journey of parenthood.

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;

I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing...and all peoples

on earth will be blessed through you.”

Genesis 12:2-3 (NIV)

It was reported* that in 1994, a 67-year-old carpenter named Russell Herman from Illinois, USA left behind a will at the time of his death. In this will, he donated the following: $2.4 billion to the tiny town of Cave-In-Rock; $1.5 billion for some development projects in south-eastern Illinois; $2.41 billion for national forests; and $2.4 billion to the city of East St. Louis. And in a final act of unprecedented generosity, he left $6 trillion to the Federal Reserve to pay off the national debt (it would take a lot more today because the debt is now over $31 trillion)!

For several years within GPC, we faced the uphill task of “moving” believers to sign up for our prayer and fasting chain, and to attend congregational prayer meetings, which had low participation. So, is the heart of praying as a community absent from the church or are there reasons holding us back?

We often hear the term “corporate prayer”. What does this mean? Corporate prayer is used to describe praying together with other people—in small groups or in larger bodies of people. It is where a community of believers are gathered together as a body of Christ to pray. Corporate prayer is an important component in the life of the church, along with worship, sound doctrine, communion, and fellowship.
