I did not realise I was anxious until I sat down to pray that day. Life has been truly turned upside down for many of us. Daily routines had all been upset: “Which day of the week was the best to leave the house and walk down to the Fairprice supermarket?” was a question I never thought I would need to ask myself just 4 weeks ago. Even my route to Fairprice had to change unexpectedly due to some red-and-white tape closing off the park connector. And I was so caught up with the changes and the distraction of work, cooking of meals and welcomed breaks of YouTube binge watching at the end of the day, that I did not realise what was happening on the inside.

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Currently, visitors and customers who patronize places offering essential services are required to have their temperature taken and complete a Health &Travel declaration form before they are allowed into the premises. Among some of the questions in the checklist are: Do you have any chronic diseases? Are you feeling unwell or having any respiratory symptoms (such as fever, cough, sore throat or runny nose)? Have you travelled outside Singapore in the past 14 days? Have you been in close contact with a person who has been confirmed/suspected to have COVID-19, Are you currently serving Quarantine Order (QO), Leave of Absence (LOA) or Stay-Home Notice (SHN)?

The recent much publicised global Corona virus 2019 outbreak (also known as Covid-19) has suddenly brought about a high intensity of interest in hygiene. This is needed to prevent the spread of the outbreak. Among the many recommended “dos and don’ts” was the emphasis on regular washing of hands. It is widely accepted by both the scientific and medical communities to prevent the spread today.

Of late, we in GPC have seen the passing of many of our worshippers. Whilst some passed away peacefully, others suffered long. It’s hard to stay unaffected. In reality, we can’t. Whether you were that caregiver or just a passing acquaintance, suffering – experienced or observed - impinges upon our theology. In other words, we often find ourselves asking, where is God in all of this pain? Does He care that I am in such pain?
