Acts 3 tells of an incident that took place at the temple gate, known as “beautiful gate.” But the sight of it was anything but beautiful. Sitting beside the temple gate was a beggar who was crippled since birth. Every day for years, he would be seen sitting there begging for food and money from those who walked through the gate. He became a permanent fixture at the gate, like part of the landscape!

During this period of anxiety and uncertainty caused by the pandemic, global warming, and other catastrophes – feeling thankful is the last thing on anyone’s mind!  Yet the Bible teaches that one should “give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thess. 5:18a, ESV)

Why does it matter for us to be thankful, especially when we go through a difficult time?   Being thankful is what distinguishes us from the rest of humanity. It is what separates God’s people from the world.

A bone-weary father dragged himself into his home dog-tired late one evening. It had been one of those unbelievable days of pressure, deadlines, and demands. He looked forward to a time of relaxation and quietness. Exhausted, he picked up the evening paper and headed for his favorite easy chair by the fireplace. About the time he got his shoes untied, plop! into his lap dropped his five-year-old son with an excited grin on his face.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

PHILIPPIANS 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything?  That’s easier said than done.  What could Paul be thinking?

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.

Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” (JOHN 14:27)

To the Greeks of Jesus’ time “peace” is the absence of war. Today we generally understand “peace” as a state of tranquility that is free from worry. Therefore, it is difficult to have peace in present times when the Covid-19 virus seems to encroach upon our lives, or when final exams loom over the weekend.Q

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
