“Sir, can I change to another family group?” I dropped a message to the Dean of Students in my seminary at the start of a new semester.

“No! No one can ask for a change,” was the firm reply that I received following my message.

In the account of Jesus feeding the five thousand (John 6:1-14), Jesus looked at the large crowd that had gathered before him and asked his disciples, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”

In preparation for the upcoming Christmas celebration, many people are now busy buying gifts for their families, friends and colleagues.  Besides the Christmas season, it is also a common practice that we bring gifts whenever we visit someone.  In fact, the more we esteem the person, the more valuable the gifts would be.  So why would anyone come before the most important person in the universe empty-handed?

A few weeks ago, I attended a briefing for church leaders by the government’s Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) on various initiatives including the strengthening of marriages and family relationships. In the dialogue which followed, there was mention of a “life-cycle” approach to the initiatives. I was very much impacted by that session. It caused me to also reflect on what the church is doing to help strengthen marriages and family relationships.

The message of the cross did not go down well with the Jews, who were offended by it, nor with the Greeks, who were amused by it (1 Cor. 1:22-23), as it seems to defy human reasoning and logic. Ever since then, not much has changed in the way the world looks at the cross of Christ!
