Some of you will know that I am with the SAF. To a professional soldier, the term “surrendering” is never in the dictionary. “Surrender” is a battle term. It implies giving up all of one’s rights, laying down the arms, and letting the superior party take control. 

However, to believers in Christ, surrendering to God is one of the first acts we must do in coming to salvation. It should also be an ongoing habit of those walking in Christ. In a spiritual sense, to surrender means to completely set aside our own plans and eagerly seek God’s plan.

In Jeremiah 8:22, the prophet asked the people of Israel…

“Is there no balm in Gilead?”

Gilead was a place in Israel well known for its healing balm (a medicinal ointment).  The healing balm of Gilead is like the ancient equivalent of Tiger Balm or “hong-yu” that our parents and those of their generation grew up using.

Everyone who has been redeemed by the atoning work of Jesus Christ is part of God’s family on earth. When God saves us, He also brings us into a community called the church. It is a place where we can learn to love and be loved, support and encourage one another, and to be accountable to one another.

One common word that best describes the church is the word “community”.

The word “community” has the word “unity” in it. In the Acts of the Apostles, we are told that all the believers were “united in heart and mind” (Acts 4:32a, NLT).

Singaporeans love to eat, and I believe so does the community in GPC. My late father loved good food, and he made it a point to bring the family around Singapore to enjoy the good food he had discovered, just to taste and see. His cooking brought the family together at the table. For my mother, whenever she had tasted and seen recipes of food, she would cook for us to enjoy, and they often brought the extended family together.  My siblings and I saw how our parents showed their love for the extended family by always putting good food on the table during family gatherings.  Several non-Christian relatives who experienced Christ’s love through my parents’ love and service, had also turned their eyes to Jesus and accepted Christ as their personal Saviour.

As we continue our journey in the Psalms, I looked for places in the Psalms where the Psalmists express happiness and joy. Yet as I searched, I found something interesting: The good times for God’s people often comes with God’s presence and action in their lives!
