Born To Be Overcomers

BY REV GOH YONG KUANG

Have you ever heard a doctor congratulating a mother for giving birth to a born loser?  Healthy baby boy/ girl…yes!  Loser…no!

Is there really such a thing as a born loser?  But some people actually believe that they are born to be losers!  They feel that nothing will ever turn out right for them nor can they do anything right.  Even though God never created us to be losers, yet we can end up as one…by the way we choose to think or act.

There was a story that I read which tells about a little child who ran as fast as he could to a local movie theatre because they were giving away free candy bars to the first 100 people at the theatre.  He was the 101st person…so he missed the free candy!

As he grew older, he joined the military and ended up with a desk job in the office where he met and fell in love with a beautiful red-haired girl.  They began dating, but she broke up with him because her mother told her that he was not worth anything!

Later, he applied to an art school but was told that his talent was only average and to stop dreaming about making a career out of his art.  He received his lowest grades in drawing children!

In 1950, he began drawing comic strips that featured a little boy who was considered a loser, who was told that he’s not worth anything: that he had no talent, and his admiration for a little red-haired girl was not appreciated.

For the next 50 years of his life, millions of people all over the world enjoyed watching the TV show and reading the comic strip “Peanuts” featuring Charlie Brown, his dog, Snoopy and others.

One day when asked how he managed to overcome the odds in his life, he attributed his success to one person in his life – Jesus!  He once told the reporters exactly what the apostle Paul told others, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

With God’s help, we can become the person we are meant to be – victors and overcomers in every situation and circumstance!  It doesn’t matter what others see or think of you.  What’s important is to see yourselves as God sees you.

In God’s eyes, we are all objects of His great love!  We are precious to Him.  If not, Jesus would not have died to save us.  Let us continue to trust God to fulfil His purpose in and for our lives!

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world -- our faith. - 1John 5:4 ESV
