Being Missional 04: Be a light, be His light!

BY REV DR FOREST KOH

Read and act by purchasing solar lights to bring light to the lives of those living without electricity. Consider this alarming fact: "16 percent of the world’s population is still living without electricity." *

In the midst of escalating conflicts in Myanmar, my friend Pastor Albert embarked on a mission in early November. Among various missional tasks, he oversaw the distribution of 400 solar lights on the outskirts of Yangon, benefiting 1,500 homes deprived of electricity. The BEALIGHT 4 Myanmar team, comprised four young adults whom Pastor Albert knew when they were kids. They diligently facilitated this charitable and meaningful initiative. One story involved an elderly widow who, prior to receiving solar light, relied on coconut oil for dim illumination, inadvertently polluting her home with smoke. Now, thanks to the solar light, she enjoys a brighter and cleaner living environment.

The distribution of these lights not only illuminated homes but also provided Pastor Albert and his team with opportunities to share the gospel.

Serving in the same missional spirit, my first English book, Our Stories, His Stories: Connecting Elderly to the Faith, shares stories of how some elderly in Singapore found their faith. A labor of love that took me three years to write and eight years to publish. I am excited that it serves more than just a book to inspire. It goes beyond mere inspiration, serving as a catalyst for action. I invite you to purchase one or more solar lights, contributing to the millions still living in darkness.

In this context, reading becomes missional -- be His light!

Our Lord Jesus, the first missionary in Christian history, was born in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn (Luke2:7) - perhaps, there was no light either; perhaps, only moonlight. Yet, Jesus is the light of the world, the radiant force that dispels darkness. He promised that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. (John 8: 12)

As His followers, we are called to be that illuminating light, shining brightly in a world lost in darkness and people who see our good deeds will give glory to our Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

Be a light and be His light!
